Detailed Information on Sinusitis

Sinusitis is an inflammation or infection of the air pockets on either side of and behind the nose. It is traditionally subdivided into acute , subacute , and chronic. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi (molds) and possibly by allergies. About 15-20 % of the population has a chronic sinusitis (meaning lasting longer than 3 weeks). It can cause a tremendous amount of suffering. Acute sinusitis is usually precipitated by an earlier upper respiratory tract infection, generally of viral origin. Virally damaged surface tissues are then colonized by bacteria, most commonly Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Staphylococcus aureus. Chronic sinusitis, sinusitis that persists for at least 3 weeks, affects an estimated 32 million people in the United States.

Hopefully the follow-on work of the Mayo Clinic and University of Buffalo will identify antifungal treatments that can finally go after the root cause of recurring sinus infection. Sinus sufferers should be aware of these research efforts and be ready to discuss these findings with their ENT specialists. Maybe serious help is finally on the way.

I had 2 different allergy tests, both negative. The Mayo/U. of Buffalo research says this is not an allergic reaction like a pollen allergy, so it wouldn't show up in an allergy test. It's an over reaction to fungus by T-cells that damage the sinus lining and gives bacteria a place to grow. Most people have no reaction, but most people with chronic sinusitis do. Apparently there is a test, but ENT's are skeptical. Mine said the fungus idea was false and suggested surgery. If I was cynical, I might think his opinion was because there's no surgical solution.

3. Don't use a nose spray with a decongestant in it for more than 3 days. 4. Fenugreek is considered as most effective home remedy for sinusitis.

Sinus Buster is a capsaicin pepper based nasal spray for use in relieving the symptoms of sinus headaches and chronic sinus congestion. Sinus Buster was created by self-defense instructor Wayne Perry. Wayne had apparently suffered from severe chronic headaches, which he called cluster headaches. These headaches caused Wayne to have horrible pain.

I asked Carlton in a follow-up email if he had tested positive for fungi in previous allergy tests, and here is his response: 'Hello Walt:

1. Start using pulsating nasal irrigation to cleanse the nose of crusty old mucus which could be carrying toxins. 2. Test your environment to see if you are exposed to high levels of fungus.

Treatment of sinus infection Treatment of sinus infection involves natural remedies like hot water treatment which means hot water treatments refer to inhaling vapors of from hot water added with mint or lemon juice. Nasal irrigation mixture sea salt in hot water to desirable amount and put drops of water in one nostril and bring it out from the other. And one must be very careful in the diet one has as all this helps in getting rid of sinus. Steam inhalation, hot compression, nasal irrigation, warm soup, mixture of apple cider vinegar, honey and ginger, garlic etc all have curative properties. Most of these treatments of sinus infection such as home remedies must be started right at the onset of the ailment. Plenty of vitamin C for many months is said to keep the sinus infection at bay. Taking some vitamin A, weekly dose and vitamin E twice weekly may help too, helps control the mucous.

5. Drinking plenty of fluids to keep nasal discharge thin. 6. Using an oral decongestant or a short course of nasal spray decongestant

As part of our efforts to chronicle the experiences of sinusitis sufferers, a gentleman named Carlton contributed a 'Sinusitis Treatment Success' story.

Sinusitis Treatment and Prevention Tips 1. Vitamin C is also very beneficial for sinusitis. 2. Vitamins like A and C are very much responsible to treat and to prevent sinusitis

He suffered these cluster headache attacks several times a year while he was in his 20's but started having them several times a week once he turned 30. At this point he could barely perform his basic daily tasks.

I'll let you know how it goes, but so far, I feel much better. Carlton' Huge Implications in the Study Results There are huge implications in this study for those who suffer from recurring sinus infection. This work could lead to treatments that treat the root cause of the problem for the first time.

A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, usually arises because of obstruction of nasal passageways due to which there is inflammation. Now when the nose gets blocked it creates a perfect playground for the bacteria to grow. Sinuses are intended to moisten and clean membranes of the nose and throat. Each sinus has a little opening into the nose which allows for mucus and air to move itself in and out of the sinuses and nose. However when these passageways get blocked, bacteria can thrive in the area causing a terrible sinus problem. Sometimes these problems can take a serious turn where one may have to receive sinus surgery. Sinus infections can range from being acute which usually only last for about 3 weeks or from being chronic, which can last up to 8 weeks to having recurring acute attacks.

Ayurvedic, homeopathic medicines and Chinese herbal medicines have become very important in the treatment of sinus infection. Doctors prescribe decongestants, antibiotics and even analgesics to cure sinus. Some even go in for endoscopic surgery to get rid of the sinus infection. Yoga has also been seen to have a good relief in the treatment of sinus infection.

Anyone who suffers from recurring sinus infection issues and who cannot find adequate relief after treatment by an otolaryngologist or after unsuccessful surgery are urged to do what Carlton has done:

3. If the tests are positive for fungus, try to improve your environment to lower the amount of fungus you are exposed to. There are numerous books and articles which address this subject.

He pointed out a study conducted by the Mayo clinic and the University of Buffalo addressing the issue of recurring sinus infection. It states that "chronic sinusitis is an immune disorder caused by fungus."

Wayne went to many doctors and had multiple tests to determine what was wrong. The doctors prescribed different medicines for him but nothing seemed to work. Wayne assumed that his chronic sinus headaches were related to his sinus congestion that he harbored in one side of his head for many years.

Americans spend millions of dollars each year for medications that promise relief from their sinus symptoms. The causes are multifactorial and may include allergy, environmental factors such as dust or pollution, bacterial infection, or fungus (either allergic, infective, or reactive). Non allergic factors such as Vasomotor rhinitis can also cause chronic sinus problems. Sinuses are hollow air spaces, of which there are many in the human body. Symptoms of sinusitis can include fever, weakness, fatigue, cough and congestion. There may also be mucus drainage in the back of the throat, called postnasal drip. Treatments include antibiotics, decongestants and pain relievers. Therapy for bacterial sinusitis should include an appropriate antibiotic.Using heat pads on the inflamed area.

He was able to land television spots on shows such as Montel Williams, Maury Povich and Oprah Winfrey. One day when Wayne was doing a spot for a FOX News affiliate in his hometown, he came down with one of his cluster headaches. Barely able to stand up and in excruciating pain, Wayne decided the show must go on. He allowed the news reporter to spray the pepper spray into his face.

Although the pain was terrible as the pepper hit him in the face, as he coughed and choked on the pepper spray fumes, he realized that his headache had completely disappeared and that his sinuses had opened up.

Saline nasal sprays and vaporizers can also help. Apply moist heat by holding a warm, wet towel against your face or breathing in steam through a cloth or towel. Don't use a nose spray with a decongestant in it for more than 3 days. If you use it for more than 3 days, the swelling in your sinuses may get worse when you stop the medicine. Sip hot liquids and drink plenty of fluids. Surgery should be considered only if medical treatment fails or if there is a nasal obstruction that cannot be corrected with medications. If you have allergies, try to avoid contact with things that trigger attacks. Drinking plenty of fluids to keep nasal discharge thin. Avoiding air travel. If you must fly, use a nasal spray decongestant before take-off to prevent blockage of the sinuses allowing mucus to drain.

7. Using a humidifier during cold weather to stop dry. 8. Sinusitis is well treated by consuming half lit of vegetable juices like carrot, cucumber, beet and spinach.

At this point, Wayne was quite worried about his future and his career. As a self-defense instructor, he was having difficulty performing properly. One of his favorite tricks was to give self-defense classes in front of live audiences and at the end of the seminar he would agree to be sprayed in the face with real police pepper spray.

This is leading edge stuff. Mayo received a patent on anti-fungal treatments. I decided to try this approach after everything else failed. I don't want surgery, because I've never heard of one that worked.

Another article in the Health Solutions Newsletter of Sept 2005 also referred to the Mayo Clinic/U. of Buffalo study and adds further clarification. Their article was entitled 'Mayo Clinic Announces Startling New Sinus Discovery'

'Jens Panikau, sinus researcher at Mayo Clinic, has published a new finding that explains why sinus disease persists despite so many new drugs. Dr Panikau found that the main cause of sinus symptoms was that the eosinophiles ' your special cells that defend your body against infection, - get into the mucus and produce a toxic product called MBP that is made in order to kill bacteria. Unfortunately, among sinus sufferers, there is an excess of this MBP in the mucus that also damages the cells of the nose and impairs its ability to sweep bacteria out of the nose. Dr Panikau shows that it is the MBP that makes the patient sick, with fever, pain, fatigue, and secondary infections.'

He knew right then that he was on to something. He started looking for a natural way to apply the pepper into the sinus cavities without the harsh effects of a police type pepper spray. Eventually he came up with the all-natural Sinus Buster /a> nasal spray. Michael Harader has been involved in the sinus infection industry for several years and is personally interested in sinus infections, natural sinus infection remedies and general sinus infection information.
